Brain Fog: An Overview of Symptoms and Treatments

Brain fog is cited as one of the most significant symptoms of poor brain functioning. However, most individuals find this condition difficult to define, leave alone treating it. The reason: it boasts of an array of causes and connections.

Brain fog is a problem that can cast an effect on an individual’s cognition and performance. For most, occasional cloudy thinking is quite normal, chiefly caused by overworking or lack of sleep. When this becomes chronic, it can be quite detrimental to the image and self-esteem.

Luckily, there are several ways to treat this fog. While some respond to healthy lifestyle changes like adequate sleep, others respond better to the pharmaceutical inventions. If your condition is so severe that it is affecting your ability to function in the society, you need to learn ways to get rid of it.

To experience mental clarity, a little bit of self-reflection is essential. Initially, you will need to pinpoint the causes of brain fog followed by coming up with viable solutions. This is characterized by difficulty in recalling known words, incorrect usage of words, and slow recall of names.

  • Short-term Memory Problem

Forgetfulness and inability to determine things read or heard rules this phase.

  • Difficulty in Multitasking

Inability to pay attention to more than one thing and forgetfulness if distracted are the chief complaints.

  • Number Difficulties

Difficulties here arise in performing simple mathematics, transposing numbers, and remembering sequences.

Brain Fog Treatments

There are several ways to cure brain fog. Caffeine and drugs only offer short-time cures, thereby providing relief only when you take them. Over the long-term, you may want to avoid the stimulating drugs as you will slowly build up a tolerance. During stimulant withdrawal, the brain fog can be worse than it was prior to using the drug. It is better to pursue natural options like getting more sleep, exercising, meditating and changing the diet.

  • Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol reduces arousal, motor skills and affects judgment. If you want to avoid brain fog, you need to bring down or rather stop alcohol consumption. Over the long term, frequent alcohol consumption alters brain functioning and neurotransmission. This leads to difficulty in maintaining optimal focus.

  • Reduce Stress

Stress, the culprit behind several diseases, can also be blamed for increased brain fog. If you feel stressed by the environment, circumstances or lifestyle, make an effort to reduce stress as much as possible. You can consider relaxing exercises and therapies to bring down stress.

  • Go for a Balanced Diet

Are you taking enough food through the day? Your brain needs adequate energy to function properly. If you aren’t providing it proper nutrition, your focus as well as the clarity to think accurately are bound to suffer. Make sure to include healthy foods like vegetables, fruits, fish, nuts, lean meats and whole grains to enjoy ideal mental health.

  • Exercise

The psychological advantages of exercising go much beyond improving mood. In most cases, getting enough exercise can improve the ability to think and learn new things. Cardio exercises are particularly helpful for the brain. In some cases, getting adequate exercise can bring down foggy thinking substantially. Just make sure not to go overboard, since that will worsen your conditions.

  • Opt for Natural Supplements

There are several brain supplements that can help with focus and clear brain fog. You need to take a few brain health supplements to help yourself. Most people find supplements like zinc, magnesium, Vitamin B6 and Omega-3 Fatty Acids to be particularly helpful in cases of attention deficits.

For best results, it is better to consider an amalgamation of several treatments listed above. These days, everyone prefers a quick fix. Several things in the list take time and dedication before you start feeling clearer. Stick to an option for at least a month before you dismiss it. If the fog is caused by a genetic or a medical condition, lifestyle and environmental changes will help you to a great extent.
